“What is jazz and where is it going?”
E no, non saremo noi a darvi una risposta ma questa bellissima (a scanso di equivoci non è un compiacere, bellissima e soprattutto “diversa” lo è davvero) “collection” di new jazz, fusion, pop, musica sperimentale, avantgarde e molto altro….Opera immensa raccolta in due CD di 17 brani ciascuno “From artists from all over the world” e dobbiamo ammetterlo ma molti dei nomi qui presenti ci sono del tutto sconosciuti (a parte Amanda Chaudhary ed i Nebdug Ensemble) ma va bene così (lo scoprire/sorprendersi è anche meglio di un sapere fine a se stesso) è stato un regalo inaspettato e (lo speriamo) pane per i nostri denti e le vostre anime. Ci piacerebbe ma per ovvi motivi di spazio e tempo non vi elencheremo tutti e 34 i brani qui presenti quindi per non fare torto a nessuno ci limiteremo a parlarvi “solo” di questa Musica. Dimenticatevi il classico jazz da format televisivo, quello da apericena e quello da “sentite quanto sono bravo e moderno”….C’è chi osa di più raccogliendo i cocci di un jazz anni ’70 per spingersi oltre, c’è il jazz elettrico caro a Miles Davis, l’armolodia di Ornette Coleman ma anche il groove funky-soul, il Pop (quello con la p maiuscola e che apprezziamo a prescindere), echi bellissimi da un tempo oramai oblio e poi ancora atmosfere folk, la musica del diavolo, marcette vaudeville anni ’20, musica di ricerca nel solco di un John Cage, le disarmonie Monkiane care a Steve Lacy….Fermi, non ce la facciamo (altrimenti Roots! invece di una webzine del tutto inutile sarebbe un marchio griffato di alta moda) ma quei demoni blues di Saskatoon degli Intige Taluure sono un abisso che affascina ed incanta (la sublime voce è di “xxx”…a voi scoprirlo) od il jazz notturno per solo piano di Anthony Coleman in Unfilled Hooks è un qualcosa che vi lascerà letteralmente “sospesi”….Per scelta editoriale di solito “non consigliamo” è tutto scritto fra le righe (il buono ed il meno buono) poi spetta solo a voi ma per questo ZZAJ: JAZZ From The 23rd Century ci vogliamo prendere qualche libertà e quindi sì ve lo consigliamo caldamente ma attenzione non è per una banale questione di “piacere” (sempre personale e non discutibile) ma perché avrete l’occasione di ascoltare “altro”, di confrontarvi brano dopo brano con realtà sì diverse ma nemmeno poi tanto, è apertura mentale, è quel dubbio che traccia dopo traccia vi accompagnerà sempre….“What is jazz and where is it going?”. Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

“What is jazz and where is it going?”
And no, we won’t be the ones to give you an answer but this beautiful (for the avoidance of doubt it is not a please, beautiful and above all “different” it really is) “collection” of new jazz, fusion, pop, experimental music, avant-garde and much more….An immense work collected in two CDs of 17 tracks each “From artists from all over the world” and we admit it, many of the names present here are completely unknown to us (apart from Amanda Chaudhary and the Nebdug Ensemble) but that’s okay (discovering/surprised is even better than knowing for its own sake) it was an unexpected gift and (we hope so) bread for our teeth and your souls. We’d like to but for obvious reasons of space and time we won’t list all 34 of the songs featured here so in order not to do anyone wrong we’ll limit ourselves to telling you “only” about this Music. Forget the classic jazz from the television format, the one for aperitifs and the one for “listen how good and modern I am”….There are those who dare more by picking up the pieces of a 70s jazz to go further, there is the electric jazz dear to Miles Davis, the harmony of Ornette Coleman but also the funky-soul groove, Pop (the one with a capital P and which we appreciate regardless), beautiful echoes from a time now forgotten and then again atmos folk freaks, the music of the devil, 1920s vaudeville marches, research music in the wake of a John Cage, the Monkian disharmonies of a Steve Lacy….Stop, we can’t take it (otherwise Roots! instead of a completely useless webzine would be a designer brand of high fashion) but those Saskatoon blues demons of Intige Taluure are an abyss that fascinates and enchants (the sublime voice is from “xxx”…it’s up to you to find out) or Anthony Coleman’s nocturnal jazz for solo piano in Unfilled Hooks is something that will literally leave you “suspended”….By editorial choice usually “we don’t recommend” it’s all written between the lines (the good and the not so good) then it’s up to you alone but for this ZZAJ: JAZZ From The 23rd Century we want to take some liberties and therefore yes we warmly recommend it but be careful it’s not for a trivial matter of “pleasure” (always personal and not debatable) but because you will have the opportunity to listen to “other”, to compare songs after track with realities that are so different but not that much, it’s open-mindedness, it’s that doubt that track after track you will always present….”What is jazz and where is it going?“.
