The Hollands! – Folk Family Revival

Un piccolo album di “sole” 22 tracce che prima ancora di essere musica è un viaggio, un invito a lasciare da parte tutte le nostre umane miserie e mettersi “on the road”; un viaggio fra le Blue Mountains dell’Australia e le sconfinate pianure del Nord America, la così detta America sorvolata, quella che sia politicamente che economicamente viene di solito relegata ai margini ma anche quella che meglio conserva le radici della grande tradizione musicale americana, quella del folk, del country, dell’hillbilly, del bluegrass, del regtime, del gospel, in poche parole (a noi familiari) roots-music ma non solo; lasciate perdere il titolo, o meglio, solo la parola Revival, perchè qui di revival non c’è, fortunatamente, assolutamente nulla, anzi. Roots, radici (oggi si direbbe più banalmente Americana), storia inscindibile (nel bene e nel male) dalla musica popolare europea e la musica degli Hollands! è anche questo, atmosfere celtiche, malinconiche ballate irlandesi, suoni che sembrano appartenere ad un altro tempo ma che a dispetto di un tutto sono ancora “tradizione” ed una realtà quanto mai viva. Se questo Folk Family Revival sia un album “bello o brutto” non spetta a noi dirlo, quello che possiamo dirvi è altro, una musica dallo scorrere naturale, semplice e piacevole, niente di innovativo si dirà ma non è questo il suo scopo, è il viaggio attraverso profumi e sapori di una parte di mondo che ancora non ne vuol sapere di “mollare”. Gli Hollands! sono Craig Holland, australiano, alla chitarra acustica, Banjo “Holland” Patterson, olandese, al cajon ed altri strumenti a percussione, la Michigander Jana Holland alla voce, mandolino, banjo e chitarra e Graciana Holland alla voce, ukelele, pianoforte e chitarra e va detto, sono maledettamente bravi; album pubblicato in questo inizio autunno 2021 per una piccola label italiana di tutto rispetto, la Funky Juice Records fondata da Roberto Colella nel 1997; 22 brani non sono pochi ma il timore di annoiarsi lascerà persto il posto al desiderio di proseguire questo viaggio fino al suo termine oppure di “restare” ancora on the road. Merito di questi bravi musicisti ma soprattutto della voce, dolce e ricca di sfumature, di Jana che riesce ad interpretare perfettamente i vari cambi di atmosfere, a narrare storie rendendole “visive”, reali, ora drammatiche come nella bella Rebel Love, una ballata d’amore irlandese sostenuta da un ritmo contagioso, nelle note più malinconiche di Over Land And Leas, vecchio racconto popolare sccozzese dalle atmosfere più moderne ma che non ne snaturano la tradizione o nella dolce-amara Russian Lullaby; mentre Fairland introdotta dalle note di un violino è una filastrocca-ninna nanna d’altri tempi, semplice ed essenziale quanto quelle che ci venivano cantate quando eravamo piccoli e che credevamo di aver dimenticato; c’è la spensierata Let It Be, lascia che sia, dai ritmi country e bluegrass, un bel sentire corale che vi metterà in armonia con un mondo che invece sembra voler andare in tutt’altra direzione e per restare in tema di armonia sono veramente belle le armonie vocali della più seria Wayfaring Stranger, canzone tradizionale della guerra civile americana, uno fra i pezzi più intensi (brava anche Graciana Holland) dove si respira la storia di un popolo raccontata dalla parte della gente comune, quella che di solito la “storia” la subisce; e quanta classe in Long Love o nel più cupo gospel-blues di Good Lord Bird ma non vogliamo rovinarvi questo viaggio con la solita ed inutile lista della spesa, un viaggio è prima di tutto un sorprendersi e preferiamo lasciare a voi il piacere di scoprirlo. Non aspettatevi ovviamente testi con particolari temi sociali o politici ma non è detto, gli Hollands! hanno un loro stile e ci raccontano temi che fanno parte di un quotidiano vivere (mai semplice, mai banale) ma con un respiro più ampio e con una propria sensibilità che se dovvessimo esprimerla in colori sarebbero quelli pastello; e sulle note di una delicatissima Lucky Birdie vi auguriamo una buonanotte e che al vostro risveglio il mondo sia davvero migliore (voi lo sarete sicuramente). A small album of “only” 22 tracks which, even before being music, is a journey, an invitation to leave all our human miseries aside and go “on the road”; a journey among the Blues Mountains of Australia and the boundless plains of North America, the so-called America overflown, that which both politically and economically is usually relegated to the margins but also the one that best preserves the roots of the great American musical tradition, that of folk, of country, hillbilly, bluegrass, regtime, gospel, in a nutshell (familiar to us) roots-music but not only; forget the title, or rather, only the word Revival, because here it is revival there is, fortunately, absolutely nothing, indeed. Roots, roots (today we would say more trivially Americana), inseparable history (for better or for worse) from European popular music and music of the Hollands! it is also this, Celtic atmospheres, melancholic Irish ballads, sounds that they seem to belong to another time but which in spite of a whole are still “tradition” and a reality as alive as ever. Whether this Folk Family Revival is a “good or bad” album is not up to us it is up to us to say it, what we can tell you is something else, a music with a natural, simple and flowing flow pleasant, nothing innovative will be said but this is not its purpose, it is the journey through perfumes and flavors of a part of the world that still does not want to “give up”. The Hollands! I’m Craig Holland, Australian, on acoustic guitar, Banjo “Holland” Patterson, Dutch, on cajon ed other percussion instruments, Michigander Jana Holland on vocals, mandolin, banjo and guitar e Graciana Holland on vocals, ukelele, piano and guitar and it must be said, they are damn good; album released in early autumn 2021 for a small respectable Italian label, the Funky Juice Records founded by Roberto Colella in 1997; 22 songs are not few but the fear of getting bored will give way to the desire to continue this journey until its end or to “stay” on the road again. Thanks to these good musicians but above all to the voice, sweet and rich in nuances, by Jana who manages to perfectly interpret the various changes of atmosphere, a tell stories making them “visual”, real, now dramatic as in the beautiful Rebel Love, a ballad of Irish love sustained by an infectious rhythm, in the more melancholy notes of Over Land And Leas, an old folktale from Schio with more modern atmospheres but which does not alter its nature tradition or in the bitter-sweet Russian Lullaby; while Fairland introduced by the notes of a violin it is a nursery rhyme-lullaby of the past, as simple and essential as those that came to us sing when we were little and that we thought we had forgotten; there is the carefree Let It Be, let it be, with country and bluegrass rhythms, a nice choral feeling that will put you in harmony with a world that instead seems to want to go in a completely different direction and to stay on the subject of harmony are the vocal harmonies of the more serious Wayfaring Stranger, a traditional song of the American civil war, one of the most intense pieces (good also Graciana Holland) where you can breathe the story of a people told by the common people, the one that usually the “story” there suffers; and how much class in Long Love or in the darker gospel-blues of Good Lord Bird but not we want to spoil this trip with the usual and useless shopping list, a trip is before all a surprise and we prefer to leave you the pleasure of discovering it. Obviously don’t expect texts with particular social or political themes but not necessarily, the Hollands! they have their own style and there they tell themes that are part of a daily life (never simple, never banal) but with a broader breath and with its own sensitivity that if we were to express it in colors it would be pastel ones; and on the notes of a very delicate Lucky Birdie we wish you a goodnight and that al your awakening the world is really better (you surely will be).
