Ma come si fa a resistere ad una copertina come questa? Sporca, colorata, “inquietante” (dipende sempre da come la si “legge”) e poi quella scritta “11 WILD UNHINGED TRACKS OF GARAGE PUNK NOISE THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANNA SNIFF GLUE IN CHURCH”. Album che avremmo scelto a prescindere “a scatola chiusa” ed incuranti di un resto, di pancia, a pelle; da Los Angeles, California (poteva essere diversamente?) i Christian Family, ovvero Sister Ann (vocals, drum and scream) e Brother Daniel (vocals and guitar), un duo dedito alla sacra fiamma di un incendiario psych-garage nudo e crudo; 11 tracce spinte al massimo per un totale di 25 minuti scarsi fra i Cramps di Lux Interior e Poison Ivy, gli X di Exene Cervenka e John Doe ed i Mummies (in questo caso più come approccio), un “suonaccio” volutamente grezzo, scarno, con riferimenti alla roots music ed alle radici black (gospel, spiritual, blues, soul). Artwork che rispetterà tutte le attese a partire dall’iniziale Who’s Gonna Catch Me un punk-rock (and spiritual) che vi trascinerà senza pietà alcuna direttamente negli anni ’50 e “peggio” ancora (cioè meglio) faranno Mad-A-Lyn (dall’oscuro beat primordiale), You Gotta Love (un satanico punk-beat) ed una perversa Oh My Don’t Cry, acqua santa ed il sempre buon vecchio diavolo al quale vendere la propria anima. Ma non è ancora finita, c’è il rock’n’roll alla Jesus And Mary Chain di Time To Pray, l’incedere punk di He’s Comin Down per concludere con il deragliare fra malsane distorioni e riverberi di I Got Problem. Fermi un attimo, vi starete chiedendo “ma lo spessore?”, lo “spessore” (parola discutibile) non c’è, o meglio, c’è solo “diverso” ma per una volta lasciatevi andare e godete senza stare a farvi troppi problemi, la musica è anche questo e serve anche a questo. Altamente in bassa fedeltà, dannato quanto basta, altamente raccomandato a tutte quelle anime che di una quotidiana banalità e mediocrità (se non un nulla) non ne vogliono sapere di accontentarsi; e da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

But how can you resist a cover like this? Dirty, colorful, partly “disturbing” (it always depends on how you “read it”) and then the one written “11 WILD UNHINGED TRACKS OF GARAGE PUNK NOISE THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANNA SNIFF GLUE IN CHURCH”, an album that we would have chosen regardless “Closed box” and regardless of a rest, belly, skin. From Los Angeles, California (could it be otherwise?) Christian Family, Sister Ann (vocals, drum and scream) and Brother Daniel (vocals and guitar), a duo dedicated to the sacred flame of a naked and raw psych-garage arsonist; 11 tracks pushed to the maximum for a total of 25 minutes between the Cramps by Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, the X by Exene Cervenka and John Doe and the Mummies (in this case more as an approach), a deliberately raw, lean “sound” and with references to roots music and black roots (gospel, spiritual, blues). Artwork that will respect all expectations starting from the initial Who’s Gonna Catch Me a punk-rock (and spiritual) that will lead you mercilessly directly into the 50s and “worse” (that is, better) will make Mad-A-Lyn ( from the dark primordial beat), You Gotta Love (a satanic punk-beat) and a perverse Oh My Don’t Cry, holy water and the good old devil to sell your soul to. But it’s not over yet, there is rock’n’roll a la Jesus And Mary Chain of Time To Pray, the most punk He’s Comin Down to conclude with the derailment among the unhealthy distortions and reverberations of I Got Problem. Stop for a moment, you are wondering “but the thickness?”, The “thickness” (questionable word) is not there, or rather, there is but for once let yourself go and enjoy without bothering yourself too much, the music it is also this and it also serves this purpose. Highly in low fidelity, damned enough, highly recommended to all those souls who do not want to be satisfied with a daily banality and mediocrity (if not nothing); and from Roots! it’s all and as always good listening (here).
