A tutti i naviganti dell’iperspazio progressive…..Rob Gould (& friends) è tornato con un “nuovo” lavoro sempre nel corso di una rivisitazione/rilettura iniziato con Pawn Hearts dei Van Der Graaf Generator…..Pausa, cosa aspettarsi questa volta da un “nuovo” virgolettato??…..Nursery Cryme dei Genesis (1971, Charisma Records) di fatto loro terzo album in studio ma anche il primo nella formazione che li consacrerà alla storia (tutto già scritto e risaputo). “Ma che senso ha riproporre un album e per di più “minore” quando volendo si può tornare ad ascoltarci direttamente l’originale?”….Una bella domanda alla quale però non abbiamo risposta se non che per cimentarsi in una rilettura (meglio, riscrittura) di un album a suo modo storico e compositivamente complesso come questo (e Rob Gould & Friends sono veramente stratosferici) bisogna prima “sentirlo”….non è e non lo sarà mai una sola questione di tecnica. Riscrittura appunto anche se musicalmente non si discosterà molto dall’originale (menzione a parte per la bellissima For Absent Friends lasciata alla splendida voce di Kimberly Bass e la sognante Seven Stones)…..E poi The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed, Harold The Barrel, The Fountain Of Salmacis….Ma se compositivamente le note ricalcheranno le tracce dell’originale diverso sarà un suono (almeno alle nostre orecchie), più moderno, più attuale (se poi sia un “male” o meno non spetta a noi dirlo però merita sicuramente un ascolto)….Per i crediti vi rimandiamo a questa pagina mentre per altre considerazioni (più o meno giuste, più o meno discutibili) vi rimandiamo ad un suo ascolto “all inclusive” (LP+CD con due bonus tracks che troverete qui) o parzialmente qui….Da un 1971 ad un 2023 dove tutto sembra voltare verso un peggio (sempre per il “bene comune”….e c’è anche ci crede) direttamente questo Nursery Cryme, vecchio o nuovo che sia non ve ne pentirete…cibo per l’anima. Da Roots! è tutto e buon sogno.

To all navigators of the progressive hyperspace…..Rob Gould (& friends) is back with a “new” work always in the course of a revisiting/rereading started with Pawn Hearts by the Van Der Graaf Generator…..Pause, what to expect this time from a “new” inverted comma??…..Nursery Cryme by Genesis (1971, Charisma Records) in fact their third studio album but also the first in the lineup that will consecrate them to history (all already written and known). “But what’s the point of re-proposing an album and, moreover, a “minor” album when, if you want, you can go back to listening directly to the original?“….A good question to which, however, we have no answer except that to try your hand at a re-reading (or rather re-writing) of an album like this in its historical and compositionally complex way (and Rob Gould & Friends are truly stratospheric) you must first “feel” it….it is not and never will be a single question of technique. Rewriting precisely even if musically it will not differ much from the original (a separate mention for the beautiful For Absent Friends left to the splendid voice of Kimberly Bass and the dreamy Seven Stones) ….. And then The Musical Box, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed, Harold The Barrel, The Fountain Of Salmacis …. But if compositionally the notes follow the traces of the original it will be a different sound (at least to our ears), more modern, more current (if it is then an “evil” or less it’s not up to us to say but it’s definitely worth a listen)…..For the credits we refer you to this page while for other considerations (more or less fair, more or less questionable) we refer you to an “all inclusive” listening of his (LP+CD with two bonus tracks that you will find here) or here….From a 1971 to a 2023 where everything seems to turn towards the worse (always for the “common good”….and there’s even believe it) directly this Nursery Cryme, old man or new that it is you will not regret it….food for the soul. From Roots! that’s all and good dream.
