A scanso di equivoci “quel film” non lo abbiamo ancora visto (ma citando Jack Black in Alta Fedeltà c’è sempre quell’ancora…..il che vuol dire che probabilmente lo andremo a vedere). Di quale film stiamo parlando?? Di Bobby Deerfield (Un Attimo, Una Vita) film del 1977 diretto da Sydney Pollack ed interpretato nel ruolo di Bobby dal grande Al Pacino…Film ambientato nel mondo della Formula 1 ma solo come pretesto per raccontarci in realtà di ben più complesse e fragili relazioni umane…..relazioni e riflessioni che saranno da input per questo terzo lavoro in studio di Niia songwriter e compositrice americana di origini italiane (Niia Bertino). Artista di successo (20 milioni e passa di streaming sulle varie piattaforme digitali a quanto ci dicono…..mentre qui siamo sempre a battere cassa)…..successo sicuramente meritato ma se ne parliamo è perché la sua musica è altro (o almeno ci sembra)….Pop verrebbe banalmente da dire ma prima ascoltate….Intanto Niia ha una splendida voce che si presta a più sfumature (anche se in ambito leggermente diverso ci ricorda la cantante jazz Cassandra Wilson e scusate se è poco) poi gli arrangiamenti, moderni ovviamente ma mai scontati….Album “pop” dalle sfumature (notevoli) R&B e soul (le bellissime Night Ride, Sick In My Mind, Heaven Has No Favorites….I Wanna Feel You) fino all’alt-folk di una notturna A Star For A Star, la tenera The Moon Is A Beautiful, Lonely, Woman e la strumentale title track destino ed oblio…..Il classico album da classifica?? No, “fortunatamente” no, troppo sincero, troppo fragile, a tratti incerto (ma tanto di cappello a quei cori di tradizione soul, un gran bel sentire)….Questa è Niia oggi, tra un fotogramma e l’altro ci racconta di ferite, cicatrici, “riletture” di uno scorrere….Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui o qui).

For the avoidance of doubt, we have not yet seen “that film” (but quoting Jack Black in High Fidelity there is always that anchor….. which means that we will probably go see it). What movie are we talking about?? By Bobby Deerfield (One Moment, One Life) 1977 film directed by Sydney Pollack and interpreted in the role of Bobby by the great Al Pacino …… drama set in the world of formula 1 and fragile human relationships which will be the input for this third studio work by Niia American songwriter and composer of Italian origins (Niia Bertino). Successful artist (20 million and more streaming on the various digital platforms according to what they tell us…..while here we are always beating cash)…..a certainly deserved success but if we talk about it it is because his music is other (or at least it seems to us)….Pop would come to say trivially but first listen….In the meantime, Niia has a splendid voice that lends itself to more nuances (even if in a slightly different context she reminds us of the jazz singer Cassandra Wilson and sorry if it’s not enough) and then the arrangements, modern but never predictable…. “Pop” album with (remarkable) R&B and soul nuances (the beautiful Night Ride, Sick In My Mind, Heaven Has No Favorites….I Wanna Feel You) up to the alt-folk of a nocturnal A Star For A Star, the tender The Moon Is A Beautiful, Lonely, Woman and the instrumental title track destiny and oblivion…..The classic chart album?? No, “fortunately” no, too sincere, too fragile, at times uncertain (but hats off to those traditional soul choirs, a great feeling)….This is Niia today, between one frame and another tells of wounds, scars, “rereadings” of a flow ….From Roots! that’s all and as always good listening (here or here).
