Al principio eravamo un pò indecisi (sul perchè ci arriverete proseguendo nella lettura) ma quando abbiamo visto quella musicassetta con il logo nero su sfondo bianco e quell’artwork così “d’altri tempi” non abbiamo resistito (anche l’occhio vuole la sua parte), poi è vero, c’è tutto il resto e che probabilmente ha più valore di quello che si mostra subito all’occhio ma tant’è, è una cosa che sazia e fa da antipasto (o contorno) a tutto il resto. Dovremmo dire NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal), quella prima e nascente ondata (inglese) di heavy metal nata sul finire degli anni 70 e primi 80 (del secolo scorso), senonché non siamo in Inghilterra ma bensì a Ventura, California e nell’anno di grazia 2011; è qui che si formerà il primo nucleo dei Night Demon, Jarvis Leatherby alla voce e basso, Brent Woodward alla chitarra e Dusty Squires alla batteria, niente di più e niente di meno ma è quanto basta per resuscitare dalle tenebre di questi tempi (musicalmente infausti soprattutto per l’heavy metal, precisiamo, non sempre) quel buon e vecchio sound dei primi anni. Un HM nudo e crudo, senza orpelli, effetti vari, sovraincisioni o suoni ultrapompati per soddisfare ansie da prestazione, niente di tutto questo, intendiamoci, vuol dire anche un suono più “povero” alle orecchie “contemporanee” ma l’attitudine, la passione, la genuinità faranno il resto (cioè la differenza). EP di debutto per i Night Demon che risale al giugno 2013 ma, come suggerisce il sottotitolo expanded edition, che si compone delle quattro tracce originali più due extra bonus, più due registrate in sede live e va detto, ristampa curatissima a cura della Iron Grip Records. Come suona? E come volete che suoni, bello tosto, “vecchio” (cioè classico, quindi sempre attuale), Iron Maiden, Saxon e Def Leppard ma anche i californiani Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot e Ratt per capirsi (in dosi molto minori); un bell’album, basta non avere troppe aspettative, in parole povere gustetevelo per quel che è e per quello che in tutta la sua semplicità può darvi, nessuna concessione a quella presunta “modernità” tanto sbandierata (che si chiami post, new o altro) e la tiratissima Ritual ne è un esempio lampante, suonata come dio comanda, intro devastante, riff potenti ed una sezione ritmica secca e precisa, “compositivamente” niente di imprescindibile ma è proprio quell’acqua fresca della quale se ne sente sempre il bisogno. C’è The Chalice dallo scorrere più lento e cupo con il basso di Leatherby in primo piano e cori “old-style”, bello e quasi commovente; non è da meno la titletrack d’apertura, tanta roba con la voce di Leatherby che a tratti ricorda quella del grande (e perduto, no, non nel senso che è spirato) Paul Di’Anno (vocalist e anima dei primi Iron Maiden) ma molto più pulita (un’attitudine più metal che punk), Lightning To The Nations ha degli ottimi cambi ritmici che la rendono granitica e maestosa (ma non ancora epic-metal) con la chitarra di Woodward che è proprio quello che si vorrebbe sentire, onesta, tecnica ma senza mai strafare; e dai profumi inebrianti di un tempo, che comunque lo si voglia vedere appartiene più alla storia che al presente, è Ancient Evil, e qui c’è poco da dire, al “rinascimento” dell’heavy metal non crediamo, le sue evoluzioni (trash, black, death, speed, doom e via discorrendo) sono state la sua (e nostra) salvezza, necessaria, indispensabile ma qui siamo di fronte all’ABC, se non esistesse non ci sarebbe stato un seguito e badate bene, un seguito che non ha data di scadenza (in qualsiasi tempo o luogo lo si suoni), non ne siete convinti? Bene, ascoltatevi la registrazione live di Radar Love, una cover del singolo dei Golden Earring datato 1973 che scalò le classifiche di mezzo mondo, che si può volere di più?. Qui non consigliamo né suggeriamo “ascolti” (né tantomeno pubblicizziamo), recensiamo e parliamo di musica, nient’altro; un primo tassello questo Night Demon E.P. al quale seguirà una storia di tutto rispetto e della quale riparleremo in futuro ma non ora, noi ci fermiamo qui (a buon intenditor poche parole), da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

At the beginning we were a little undecided (about why you will get there by continuing to read) but when we saw that cassette with the black logo on a white background and that artwork so “of others times “we could not resist (even the eye wants its part), then it’s true, there is everything else and that probably has more value than what’s immediately shown to the eye but anyhow, it’s something that satisfies and serves as an appetizer (or side dish) to everything else. We should say NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal), that first and nascent (English) wave of heavy metal born in the late 70’s and early 80s (of the last century), except that we are not in England but rather in Ventura, California and in the year of grace 2011; this is where the first Night Demon core, Jarvis Leatherby, will be formed on vocals and bass, Brent Woodward on guitar and Dusty Squires on drums, nothing more and nothing less but it is enough to resurrect from the darkness of these times (musically inauspicious especially for heavy metal, we specify, not always) that good old sound of the early years. A bare and raw HM, without frills, various effects, overdubs or ultra-tuned sounds to satisfy performance anxieties, none of this, mind you, also means a “poorer” sound to “contemporary” ears but the attitude, the passion, the genuineness will do the rest (that means difference). Debut EP for Night Demon which dates back to June 2013 but, as the expanded edition subtitle, which consists of the four original tracks plus two bonus extras, plus two recorded live and it must be said, well-kept reissue by Iron Grip Records. How it sounds? And how do you want it to sound, cool, “old” (that means classic, therefore always current), Iron Maiden, Saxon and Def Leppard but also the Californians Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot and Ratt to understand each other (in much smaller doses); a good album, just don’t have too many expectations, in words poor, enjoy it for what it is and for what it can give you in all its simplicity, none concession to that alleged “modernity” so much heralded (whether it is called post, new or other) and the very tight Ritual is a prime example, played like god commands, devastating intro, riff powerful and a dry and precise rhythm section, “compositionally” nothing essential but it is just that fresh water which one always feels the need for. There is The Chalice from scrolling slower and darker with Leatherby’s bass in the foreground and “old-style” choirs, beautiful and almost moving; the opening title track is no less, a lot of stuff with the voice of Leatherby that at times recalls that of the great (and lost, no, not in the sense that he died) Paul Di’Anno (vocalist and soul of the early Iron Maiden) but much cleaner (a more metal than punk attitude), Lightning To The Nations has excellent rhythmic changes that make it granite and majestic (but not yet epic-metal) with Woodward’s guitar which is just what you would like to hear, honest, technical but without ever overdoing it; and with the intoxicating scents of the past, which however you want to see belongs more to history than to the present, it is Ancient Evil, and here there is little to say, to the “Renaissance” we do not believe in heavy metal, its evolutions (trash, black, death, speed, doom and so on talking) were his (and our) salvation, necessary, indispensable but here we are facing to ABC, if it did not exist there would not have been a sequel and mind you, a sequel that has no date deadline (at any time or place you play it), aren’t you convinced? Well, listen to the live recording of Radar Love, a cover of the 1973 single by Golden Earring which climbed the rankings around the world, what more could you want ?. Here we neither recommend nor suggest “Listen” (nor do we advertise), we review and talk about music, nothing else; a first dowel this Night Demon E.P. which will be followed by a respectable story and of which we will talk again in the future but not now, we stop here (a few words to the wise), from Roots!
