E no, il black metal non è proprio nelle nostre corde….non è vero, lo è…ma deve deve “arrivarci” e non è così semplice….”arrivarci”, perché ascoltarlo non ci basta, deve strapparci le budella senza pietà alcuna, farci sanguinare di materia finalmente viva, trascinare la nostra anima in un non-luogo con il quale doversi confrontare, dolore necessario ma salvifico…Due o tre cose su questo lavoro, Kvaen è un progetto solista (anche se non mancheranno collaborazioni) a firma Jacob Björnfot (svedese di Kalix, Norrbotten…nel caso fatevi aiutare da una mappa, comunque è lassù, ad un estremo Nord); non è un “capolavoro” nel senso classico ma un bell’album si….non solo, è quella porta di accesso che vi permetterà (o meno, sarà pur sempre una vostra scelta) di addentrarvi nei territori più oscuri della vostra anima. A questo punto vi starete domandando che cosa possa avere di così interessante un album di “grezzo” black metal, autoprodotto e (immaginiamo) ad uso e consumo di una piccola nicchia di metallari “dediti all’alcol, alle droghe ed a bruciare chiese”….Lo volete proprio sapere? Ha (dal verbo avere) quello che molti, anche gruppi ben più blasonati, non hanno più, Poesia. Black metal come attitudine ma un approccio (strumentale-compositivo) nel più classico heavy metal (trash compreso) si scuola anni ’80….riff senza pietà, splendide aperture armoniche e melodiche, intuizioni ritmiche, pause giusto il tempo per riprendere un fiato sempre sul punto di spezzarsi…ed è un gran bel sentire (anche tecnicamente qui si vola altissimi). Un’ultima cosa che non è da noi ma ci è presa così, non vi accenneremo nel particolare a nessuna delle singole tracce (8) di questo The Funeral Pyre, vi basti sapere che in questa musica vi inoltrerete (intendiamoci, non è un obbligo, leggetelo come una possibilità) e ne uscirete solo con le vostre gambe, altro non serve e sarebbe inutile….per correttezza vi diciamo di non aver ancora ascoltato il “suo” ultimo album The Great Below (marzo 2022) cosa che faremo a tempo debito ma non ora (comunque se siete interessati lo trovate qui). The Funeral Pyre non è proprio quell’album che lo si possa consigliare a “cuor leggero” tipo “Hey dai ragazzi, ascoltatelo e divertitevi!”…no, non è così semplice ma nel nostro essere disfunzionali ve lo “consigliamo” (le virgolette perché qui di consigli da dare non ne abbiamo né ci interessa darli) lo stesso ed a prescindere da “un genere” che immaginiamo farà storcere il naso a molti…ma questa è Musica, grande Musica, è ancora rock, è ancora heavy metal, è ancora quel black metal di chi oramai è oblio ma che noi ostinatamente vogliamo ricordare. Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

And no, black metal is not really in our strings …. it’s not true, it is … but it has to “get there” and it’s not that simple …. “get there”, because listening to it is not enough for us, must tear our guts without mercy, make us bleed with finally living matter, drag our soul into a non-place with which to confront, necessary but saving pain … Two or three things about this work, Kvaen is a solo project (although there will be collaborations) signed by Jacob Björnfot (Swedish from Kalix, Norrbotten … in case you need help from a map, however it is up there, in the North); it is not a “masterpiece” in the classic sense but a good album yes …. more, it is the gateway that will allow you (or not, it is simply a choice) to enter the darkest territories of your soul. At this point you may be wondering what could be so interesting about an album of “raw” black metal, self-produced and (we imagine) for the use and consumption of a small niche of dysfunctional metalheads “addicted to alcohol, drugs and burning churches “…. Do you really want to know? It has (from the verb to have) what many, even more famous groups, no longer have, Poesia. Black metal as an attitude but an approach (instrumental-compositional) in the most classic heavy metal (including trash) is school of the 80s …. merciless riffs, splendid harmonic and melodic openings, rhythmic intuitions, pauses just enough time to resume a breath always on the verge of breaking … and it is a great feeling (even technically here you fly very high). One last thing that is not from us but is taken in this way, we will not mention any of the individual tracks (8) of this The Funeral Pyre in detail, just know that in this music you will go forward (mind you, it is not an obligation , read it as a possibility) and you will come out only with your legs, nothing else is needed and it would be useless …. to be fair we tell you that we have not yet listened to his latest album The Great Below (March 2022) which we will do in time debt but not now (however if you are interested you can find it here). The Funeral Pyre is not really that album that can be recommended to a “light heart” like “Hey come on, listen to it and have fun!” … no, it’s not that simple but in our dysfunctional being “we recommend it” ( the quotes because here we have no advice to give nor are we interested in giving them) the same and regardless of “a genre” that we imagine will make many turn up their noses … but this is Music, great Music, it is still rock it is still heavy metal, is that black metal of who is now oblivion but that we obstinately want to remember.
