Si, i Gorech arrivano da San Pietroburgo, Russia, e allora? Qui gli embarghi/censure non esistono, non esistono proclami propagandistici pro od a favore di una o l’altra parte, qui non dipendiamo nè dal petrolio nè dal grano ma solo da un cervello (il nostro, discutibilissimo ma tant’è). Black metal, in realtà più un melodic black metal ma nemmeno poi tanto, Nikita Balakin alla chitarra e voce, Sergey Karasev al basso, Aleksandr Vershinin alla batteria ed Evgeny Nikolsky al cello; avete letto bene, al cello, strumento forse inusuale se si guarda al black metal come genere ma è proprio questo approccio “neo-classico” che ci ha incuriosito e sì, questo Antagonist è davvero un bell’album, sicuramente dalle possibilità ancora in divenire ma ha quel qualcosa che…o lo ascoltate o non lo si può spiegare. Atmosfere epiche, scure, drammatiche, sezione ritmica senza compromessi, devastante (Call Of Sorrow, le bellissime Antagonist ed In My Heart), malinconici passaggi acustici e ripartenze improvvise (Suffer In The Cold), un sentire violento, triste e poi….poi il cello di Nikolsky ad ergersi sublime e maestoso al di sopra di tutte le nostre umane miserie (To Mother, Forest Energy, l’iniziale Intro e la conclusiva Outro); un suono gelido, arcaico, oscuro ma non “il male” (quello è solo nostro). Oltre non ci spingeremo, a voi il piacere/dispiacere/sorpresa/abisso nel quale perdersi o ritrovarsi; budella, tranci di carne, oblio, poesia. Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

“Lightning and thunderclaps will always remind you of you. Cold rain your tears. Strong wind is your breath.” (from In My Heart) Yes, the Gorech come from St.Petersburg, Russia, so what? Here the embargoes do not exist, there are no propaganda proclamations for or in favor of one or the other party, here we do not depend on either oil or wheat but only on a brain (ours, highly questionable but so on). Black metal, actually more a melodic black metal but not that much, Nikita Balakin on guitar and vocals, Sergey Karasev on bass, Aleksandr Vershinin on drums and Evgeny Nikolsky on cello; you read that right, on cello, the instrument was unusual if you look at black metal as a genre but it is precisely this “neo-classical” approach that intrigued us and yes, this Antagonist is a really good album, certainly with possibilities still in the making but it has that something that … either you listen to it or you can’t explain it. Epic, dark, dramatic atmospheres, uncompromising, devastating rhythm section (Call Of Sorrow, the beautiful Antagonist and In My Heart), melancholy acoustic passages and sudden starts (Suffer In The Cold), a violent, sad feeling and then … .then Nikolsky’s cello to rise sublime and majestic above all our human miseries (To Mother, Forest Energy, the initial Intro and the final Outro); a cold, archaic, dark sound but not “evil” (that is ours alone). We will not go further, to you the pleasure / sorrow / surprise / abyss in which to get lost or find yourself; guts, slices of meat, oblivion, poetry. From Roots! it’s all and as always good listening (here).
