Alzi la mano chi non si è mai fatto una compilation su una di quelle “vecchie” casette TDK, JVC o Maxell (solo per citarne alcune); spesso erano per genere, altre delle vere e maldestre “the best of the best” (maldestre e lo sapete benissimo). Oggi con i vari Spotify, Bancamp, Youtube è tutto più semplice (forse ma non è vero, sicuramente non a livello personale); bene, perchè c’è ancora chi nelle compilations ci crede e non sono pochi, in questo caso è una piccola etichetta indipendente inglese, la Aldora Britain Records, purtroppo ed è un peccato, non su cassetta ma per il momento disponibile solo in formato digitale, non importa, ci accontentiamo comunque perchè lo spirito è quello giusto e non potrebbe essere dei migliori. Non aspettatevi una top-five in stile Alta Fedeltà (High Fidelity) il film di Stephen Frears del 2000, qui ci troverete di tutto e di più, 25 brani che musicalmente spaziano dal country, al rock, all’elettronica, all’hardcore fino alla psichedelia ed oltre, insomma, è una compilation di tutto rispetto. Sono tutti artisti “di casa”, ai più, almeno a noi, in parte sconosciuti ma è questo il suo bello; trattandosi di una compilation e quindi non di un “album” ci lasceremo guidare solo dall’istinto e dalla pancia (cosa che comunque facciamo di solito) evitando di entrare troppo nel merito di ciascun brano e di ogni gruppo, quando sarà il momento ne riparleremo più approfonditamente. Saltellando quà e là ecco che troviamo lo splendido hardcore punk-rock di Or degli Wreck Rebirth, davvero notevole per attitudine ed approccio, ne riparleremo sicuramente; grande classe nelle atmosfere acoustic-pop di Butterscoth dei Mackenzie Shivers, una bella voce ed ariose aperture orchestrali; c’è Contradiction, una bellissima “murder ballad” notturna e seducente dei Nomotion, un desert-rock polveroso e sudicio che riesce a scavare nei più remoti angoli dell’anima; si passa al bel country-folk dei Timbre Ghost con Twilight fino alle atmosfere sixties dei Justine’s Black Threads con He Stopped Laughing At My Jokes e non poteva mancare lo sporco blues dei Mountain Grey con Banyalla Darlin’ così come lo spensierato brit-pop degli It’s Deonta con la loro Call Me o l’interessante rock free-form di Kondonauts dei Nouveau Bleach od il bellissimo roots-blues di Pagan Redemption degli Adamsberg & Coco, davvero tanta roba. Noi ci fermiamo qui anche se sarebbe bello proseguire ma non vogliamo né ci interessa farvi la classica lista della spesa da supermercato e ci scusiamo se ingiustamente non abbiamo citato tutti gli artirsti coinvolti in questo progetto ma dei quali riparleremo con estremo piacere. Una compilation da scoprire in tutta la sua libertà di stili e generi senza farsi troppi problemi su “questo o quello” ma semplicemente lasciandosi andare al suo naturale scorrere (e lo sapete bene che qui non ci sentiamo in dovere di compiacere nessuno). Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui e solo qui).

Raise your hand if you have never made a compilation on one of those “old” TDK, JVC or Maxell (just to name a few); often they were usually real and clumsy at other times of the best “(so everything never fit). Today with the various Spotify, Bancamp, Youtube is everything more simple (perhaps but not true, certainly not on a personal level); well, because there are still those in the compilations he believes in it and there are not a few, in this case it’s a small independent label English, Aldora Britain Records, unfortunately and it’s a shame, not on tape but for the moment available only in digital format, it doesn’t matter, we are satisfied anyway because the spirit is the right one and it couldn’t be the best. Don’t expect a top-five in Alta Fedeltà style (High Fidelity) the 2000 film by Stephen Frears, here you will find everything and more, 25 tracks that musically I range from country, to rock, to electronics, hardcore to psychedelia and beyond, in short, it is a very respectable compilation. They are all “home” artists, to most, as to us, in part unknown but this is its beauty; being a compilation and therefore not an “album” there we will be guided only by instinct and the stomach (which we usually do anyway) avoiding
to go too far into the merits of each song and each group, when the time comes we will talk more in depth. Hopping around here and there we find the splendid hardcore punk-rock by Or by Wreck Rebirth, truly remarkable for his attitude and approach, we’ll talk about it again surely; great class in the acoustic-pop atmospheres of Butterscoth by Mackenzie Shivers, one beautiful voice and airy orchestral openings; there is Contradiction, a beautiful nocturnal “murder ballad” and seductive by Nomotion, a dusty and filthy desert-rock that manages to dig into the most remote corners of the soul; we move on to the beautiful country-folk of Timbre Ghost with Twilight and the sixties atmospheres by Justine’s Black Threads with He Stopped Laughing At My Jokes, the dirt couldn’t be missing Mountain Gray blues with Banyalla Darlin ’as well as the carefree Brit-pop of It’s Deonta with their Call Me, the interesting rock-free form of Kondonauts by Nouveau Bleach and the beautiful roots-blues by Adamsberg & Coco’s Pagan Redemption, a lot of stuff. We stop here even if it would be nice to continue but we neither want nor are we interested in making you the classic supermarket shopping list and we apologize if we wrongly did not mention all the artists involved in this project but which we will talk about with great pleasure. A compilation from discover in all its freedom of styles and genres without getting too many problems on “this or that” but simply letting go of its natural flow (and you know well that we do not feel here in duty to please anyone). From Roots! it’s all and as always good listening (here and only here).
