Detieti – Serious IV

Come è andata la storia lo sappiamo tutti, il progressive rock visse il suo momento di gloria nei primi anni ’70 (diciamo fino alla sua metà) poi un lento declino fino a quando a rimettere le cose a posto (fortunatamente per alcuni, per gli amanti del prog un pò meno) ci pensò la nuova ondata punk e punk-rock. Non siamo nostalgici e non tutti si riconosceranno in queste, sottolineiamo personali, considerazioni ma fu un bene (allora); mai sopportati quegli interminabili brani gonfi di retorica “colta”, di tecnica spesso fine a se stessa, di una teatralità che guardava lontano ma anche lontana dalla quotidianità; un attimo, c’era anche del buono, c’era anche della buona musica ed il prog italiano ne è stata forse la sua massima espressione (in un contesto storico, quello degli anni ’70, non facile). Cosa è rimasto oggi? Nulla o quasi, la scelta è fra andare a riascoltarsi qualche album del passato od avere la fortuna (come è capitata a noi) di imbattersi in qualche piccolissimo capolavoro (del nostro tempo) uscito da chissà dove; stiamo parlando dei Detieti (si legge Deti Yeti) e di questo loro ultimo album dal titolo Serious IV (Addicted Label) che vede la luce proprio sul finire di questo confusionale 2021; arrivano da Mosca e qui al loro quarto album in studio, sono Mikhail Ivanov al basso, Viktor Tikhonov alla batteria e percussioni, Sasha Kosarenko alle chitarre e no, non aspettatevi “quel” prog ma qualcosa di finalmente personale e forse anche innovativo, non un capolavoro ma se al prog proprio non potete rinunciare almeno provate a “vederlo” in un contesto più attuale. Album che si compone di 4 tracce strumentali 2 delle quali dal minutaggio piuttosto lungo ma che assolutamente non annoiano, anzi, alle mie arecchie “blasfeme” suonano che è tanta roba; apre Disorienteria con i suoi quasi 13 minuti tutti da scoprire, è prog ma attraversato da un ostinato pulsare funky, divagazioni jazz-fusion, dissacranti inserti elettronici, partiture sinfoniche, squarci hardcore, stratificazioni anni ’70, è un prog quasi scarnificato che fortunatamente perde quella “pesantezza” che gli era tipica e va anche detto che l’interazione fra questi ragazzi è ottima (prestate attenzione agli ultimi minuti quando esploderà in un lanciatissimo prog-core); a seguire Milky Squid dagli improvvisi cambi di ritmo, ondate prog-core e derive noise da togliere il fiato, pezzo duro e schizofrenico ma un bel sentire così come lo sarà la successiva ma profondamente diversa Reflective Architect, drum-machine, tappeti di synth, chitarra in levare di scuola dub-reggae, il tutto per un effetto davvero straniante. A chiudere questo lavoro i 13 minuti (devastanti) di Z.O.V., anche qui siamo su territori prog-core con una sezione ritmica martellante ed incursioni nei più disparati generi senza alcun timore reverenziale ma con una libertà compositiva che oggi ha davvero pochi eguali, ad un certo punto subentrerà anche una melodia orientaleggiante ma sarà solo per pochi attimi poi si apriranno nuovi ed inaspettati orizzonti che lascieremo a voi il piacere di scoprire. Un’attitudine molto Zappiana (ci sembra, poi potremmo anche sbagliarci), molto prog ma fuori dai “soliti schemi” triti e ritriti, una musica che sembra volere e potere andare oltre ma dove non lo sappiamo, detto questo se volete darvi una bella ripulita da tutte le “regnatele” di un passato che certo non più riproponibile sapete cosa fare; da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

We all know how the story went, progressive rock had its moment of glory in early 70s (let’s say up to its middle) then a slow decline until you put things back in place (fortunately for some, for prog lovers a little less) the new wave took care of it punk and punk-rock. We aren’t nostalgic and not everyone will recognize themselves in these, we emphasize personal considerations but it was good (then), never endured those interminable swollen passages of “cultured” rhetoric, of technique often an end in itself, of a theatricality that looked far but also far from everyday life; a moment, there was also good, there was also good music and the Italian prog was perhaps its maximum expression (in a historical context, that of the years ’70, not easy). What is left today? Nothing or almost nothing, the choice is between going to listen to some again albums of the past or have the luck (as happened to us) to run into some very small ones masterpiece (of our time) released from who knows where; we are talking about the Detieti (reads Deti Yeti) and their latest album entitled Serious IV (Addicted Label) which sees the light right on end of this confusional 2021; they come from Moscow and here on their fourth studio album, they are Mikhail Ivanov on bass, Viktor Tikhonov on drums and percussion, Sasha Kosarenko on guitars and no, don’t expect “that” prog but finally something personal and maybe even innovative, not a masterpiece but if you can’t give up the prog at least try to “see” it in a more current context. Album that consists of 4 instrumental tracks 2 of which from the playing time quite long but absolutely not boring, on the contrary, my “blasphemous” ears play that it’s a lot of stuff; Disorienteria opens with its almost 13 minutes to be discovered, it is prog but crossed from an ostinato funky pulsation, jazz-fusion digressions, irreverent electronic inserts, scores symphonic, hardcore glimpses, 70’s stratifications, it’s an almost stripped-down prog that fortunately it loses that “heaviness” that was typical of it and it must also be said that the interaction between these guys is great (pay attention to the last few minutes when it explodes in a very high speed prog-core); followed by Milky Squid with sudden changes in rhythm, prog-core waves and noise drifts breathtaking, hard and schizophrenic piece but a good feeling as it will be the next but profoundly different Reflective Architect, drum-machines, synth carpets, upbeat guitar’s dub-reggae school, all for a truly alienating effect. To close this work 13 minutes (devastating) by Z.O.V. , even here we are on prog-core territories with a pounding rhythm section and forays into the most disparate genres without any awe but with compositional freedom which today has very few equals, at some point an oriental melody will also take over but it will be only for a few moments then new and unexpected horizons will open up that we will leave you the pleasure to discover. A very Zappian attitude (it seems to us, then we could also be wrong), very prog but out of the “usual schemes” trite and withdrawn, a music that seems to want and be able to go beyond but where we do not know, now anyway if you want to give yourself a good clean up of all “reign” them of the past you know what to do; from Roots! it’s all and as always good listening (here).
