BRNDA – Do You Like Salt?

Si, anche se fa male alla pressione il sale ci piace soprattutto se è un sale ad alto tasso hardcore, math-rock, no wave ed art-punk come questo, un sale che di questi tempi plastificati non può che far bene. Arrivano da Washington, D.C. e lo fanno tirando dritto per la loro strada (una storia iniziata nei primi anni 2000); sono Dave Lesser alla voce, chitarra e clarinetto, Leah Gage alla voce e batteria, Torrey Sanders alla voce e chitarra, Christian Whittle al basso (tracce 1-5 e 7), Nick Stavely al basso (tracce 6, 8 e 9) e Justin Moyer al sax alto nella traccia 3; siamo nel 2021 ma quasi si stenta a crederlo, un album che sembra uscire direttamente dai primi anni 80 ma non si tratta di un banale revival o di una rivisitazione più o meno posticcia, qui si suona e questi BRNDA hanno personalità da vendere, personalità che è “oggi” e non ieri. 10 brani diretti, brevi ma che colpiscono duro per attitudine ed approccio. Sonic Youth, Minutemen ed X come riferimenti di massima, il “succo” però è tutta, come si suol dire “farina del loro sacco”; non vi troverete il classico brano ad effetto che serve a spingere un album ma buona musica si, sempre che sia nelle vostre corde, sempre che vi sia rimasta quella “infantile” voglia di andare oltre. C’è Service Loser con le sue improvvise pause e ripartenze, riff secchi e precisi e quella voce che spunta fuori dal nulla è semplicemente geniale; atmosfere psych nella ballata elettrica di Perfect World, “welcome home we’ve been waiting for you behind door one: a stable job with prestige you’ll have lead authorship on several different publications and garner many accolades and forms of affirmation you’ll have a friend with a friendly dog you’ll be a friendly neighbor and give high fives you’re in the perfect world”, basso bello corposo, arpeggi sixties ed un sax finale a spezzare l’incantesimo, mentre Diner è più scura e profonda, notturna, bello il canto declamato in crescendo di Leah Gage, breve ed intensissimo. Aunt Linda c. 1989 è un piccolo affresco di una quotidianità disarmante, “been slow burning round the house all day slumped and borrowed in my dad’s duvet press my face to the glass smell the potpourri vanilla aunt Linda and suburban tv lifelong head in the sand”; c’è la destrutturata e disarmonica The Avocado, un flusso disarticolato geniale, altamente dissonante e totalmente fuori controllo, si prosegue con la splendida ma amarissima George The Lobster con un giro di basso dilatato all’infinito e concludiamo con le note “disturbanti” di Wrong Taco, spinta fino all’eccesso, un grande hardcore, peccato si bruci in soli 1 minuto e 41 secondi, troppo pochi ma che bastano ed avanzano. Il resto di questo lavoro scopritelo da soli, non aspettatevi un capolavoro perchè non lo è (con un attimo di esitazione) ma è almeno un sentire, di questi tempi, diverso, con delle ottime intuizioni e la giusta attitudine, quella di pancia, che non deve compiacere nessuno, quella che preferiamo. Da Roots! è tutto e come sempre buon ascolto (qui).

BRNDA – Do You Like Salt?

Yes, even if it hurts the pressure, we like salt especially if it is a high hardcore rate salt, math-rock, no wave and art-punk like this, a salt that these days plasticized can only do well. They come from Washington, D.C. and they do it by going straight on their way (a story started in the early 2000s); I’m Dave Lesser on vocals, guitar and clarinet, Leah Gage on vocals and drums, Torrey Sanders on vocals and guitar, Christian Whittle on bass (tracks 1-5 and 7), Nick Stavely on bass (tracks 6, 8 and 9) and Justin Moyer on alto sax on track 3; we are in 2021 but almost it’s hard to believe, an album that seems to come straight out of the early 80’s but it’s not about a banal revival or a more or less false reinterpretation, here you play and these BRNDA have personality to sell, personality that is “today” and not yesterday. 10 direct songs, short but striking hard for attitude and approach. Sonic Youth, Minutemen and X as rough references, the “Juice”, however, is all, as they say “flour from their sack”; you will not find the classic song ad effect that serves to push an album but good music yes, as long as it is in your strings, provided that there is still that “childish” desire to go further. There is Service Loser with his sudden pauses and restarts, dry and precise riffs and that voice that comes out of nowhere is simply brilliant; psych atmospheres in the electric ballad of Perfect World, “welcome home we’ve been waiting for you behind door one: a stable job with prestige you’ll have lead authorship on several different publications and garner many accolades and forms of affirmation you’ll have a friend with a friendly dog you’ll be a friendly neighbor and give high fives you’re in the perfect world”, full-bodied bass, sixties arpeggios and a final sax to break the spell, while Diner is darker and deeper, nocturnal, Leah Gage’s song recited in crescendo is beautiful, short and very intense. Aunt Linda c. 1989 is a small fresco of a disarming everyday life, “been slow burning round the house all day slumped and borrowed in my dad’s duvet press my face to the glass smell the potpourri vanilla aunt Linda and suburban tv lifelong head in the sand “; there is the unstructured and disharmonious The Avocado, an ingenious, highly dissonant and disjointed flow totally out of control, and it continues with the splendid but very bitter George The Lobster with a bass loop dilated to infinity and we conclude with the “disturbing” notes of Wrong Taco, pushed to excess, a great hardcore, too bad it burns in just 1 minute and 41 seconds, too few but that are enough and advance. Find out the rest of this work for yourself, don’t expect a masterpiece because it is not (with a moment’s hesitation) but it is at least a feeling, these days, different, with excellent intuitions and the right attitude, that of the gut, which should not please anyone, the one we prefer.
